How to Load a Dumpster So Everything Fits

Two workers carrying moving boxes through an empty room

The order you load a dumpster in decides how much fits. Here’s how crews pack a roll-off tight and avoid paying for a second haul.

Two people can fill the same dumpster and end up with very different results. Toss things in as they come and you’ll run out of room with half the garage still waiting. Load with a plan and the same container holds far more. Here’s the approach experienced loading crews use.

Start With the Big, Flat Items

Lay flat, heavy items on the floor of the dumpster first: plywood, doors, tabletops, flattened cardboard, broken-down shelving. They make a stable base and don’t leave gaps underneath. Stand long flat pieces against the walls if they fit better that way.

Take Furniture Apart

A couch with its legs on takes up far more space than one with its legs off. Remove legs, take shelves out of bookcases, and separate tables from their bases. Hollow furniture like dressers can be filled with smaller items before it goes in.

Fill Every Gap

Once the big pieces are in, use bags, boxes and small items to fill the spaces between them. Break down boxes rather than throwing them in empty. The goal is a solid, level load with as little air in it as possible.

Spread the Weight Evenly

Don’t pile all the heavy material at one end. Spreading weight across the floor makes the container safer to haul. Dense debris like tile, concrete, dirt and shingles gets heavy fast, so check your dumpster company’s weight limit before you add a lot of it.

Stop at the Top Rim

Most dumpster companies won’t haul a container loaded above its top edge, and some charge extra or make you remove the overflow. Keep everything below the rim and nothing sticking out the sides.

Quick Recap

  1. Flat, heavy items go on the bottom.
  2. Take furniture apart and fill hollow pieces.
  3. Pack bags and boxes into the gaps.
  4. Spread heavy debris evenly and watch the weight limit.
  5. Keep the load below the rim.

If you’d rather not do the lifting, an hourly loading crew can pack it for you. Crews on Dumpster Helpers set their own rates, and you can compare them by address.
