How to Choose a Dumpster Size for Your Cleanout

By Dumpster Helpers · September 30, 2026 · 4 min read

Dumpster sizes are measured in cubic yards. A general guide to which sizes fit which jobs, and how to avoid guessing wrong.

Roll-off dumpsters are sized by volume in cubic yards. Common sizes are 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yards, though what’s available depends on the company. Exact dimensions and weight limits vary, so confirm them with your dumpster company. Here’s a general guide to get you started.

A General Guide

  • 10 yard: a garage or basement cleanout, a small remodel, or heavy material like dirt and concrete where weight is the limit
  • 15 yard: a few rooms of furniture and clutter, or a mid-size remodel
  • 20 yard: a popular size for whole-house cleanouts, larger remodels and flooring jobs
  • 30 yard: major renovations, large estate cleanouts and new construction debris
  • 40 yard: big construction, commercial cleanouts and very large volumes of light material

Volume Isn’t the Only Limit

Each dumpster also comes with a weight allowance. A small dumpster full of shingles or concrete can be heavier than a big one full of furniture. If your job is mostly dense material, tell the dumpster company, because they may recommend a smaller container or one meant for heavy debris.

When You’re Between Sizes

Going one size up usually costs less than paying for a second haul. Taking furniture apart and packing tightly also stretches the space you have. A loading crew can help you get the most into whatever size you choose.
