A short checklist that saves billed hours: dumpster placement, access, sorting and what to tell your crew before they start.

Hourly crews are fastest when everything is ready the moment they arrive. A little preparation can save you an hour or more of billed time.

Before the Dumpster Arrives

  • Pick a firm, level spot as close to the work as the delivery truck can reach.
  • Lay plywood down if you want to protect your driveway.
  • If the dumpster has to go on the street, ask your city whether you need a permit.
  • Check HOA or property manager rules on placement and how long it can stay.

The Day Before

  • Mark everything that stays with tape or sticky notes, or move it to one room.
  • Set aside restricted items like paint, chemicals and batteries.
  • Clear a path from each room to the dumpster.
  • Sort out parking, gate codes and elevator reservations.

When the Crew Arrives

  1. Walk them through what goes and what stays.
  2. Point out heavy items, stairs and anything fragile.
  3. Agree on the plan if the job may run past the hours you booked.
  4. Stay reachable by phone while they work.

Book the crew for the first day the dumpster is on site. Rentals run on a set number of days, so loading early leaves room for anything unexpected.
